Scope and Contents of the Materials
Materials in this collection range from 1910 through 2011. However, most of the collection was produced in the 1960s and 1970s. Materials include administrative files of Rose Art Museum such as, correspondence with Friends of the Rose Art Museum, exhibition logs, accession logs, guest books, and scrapbook. The collection also contains material that documents exhibitions such as newspaper clippings, photographs of the art collection and exhibits, programs, and video and audio tapes. The Archives does not maintain a comprehensive set of exhibition publicity. There is also a small collection of memorabilia and photographs of Edward and Bertha Rose. Some of the materials in the Rose Art Collection pertain to the Poses Institute of Art.
Biographical Note
The Rose Art Museum was established in 1961 to maintain a highly contemporary art collection and provide undergraduates the opportunity to study art history through direct contact with art objects. The museum was a gift of Edward and Bertha Rose. In 1974 the Roses donated funds for a new wing to the museum. In 1981 the Rose Purchase Fund was established as an "Acquisitions Fund" used solely for the purpose of acquiring artworks for the collection. The first curator of the Rose Art, Sam Hunter, made a large impact on the museum by developing the Gervirtz-Mnuchin Purchase Fund. From 1965 to 1971 William Seitz served as the director of the museum. Michael Wentworth took over the directorship in 1971 and served through 1974. Following Wentworth, Carl Belz held the directorship of the museum until 1998; the position was then held by Joseph Ketner until 2005. The museum's collection includes work by Rene Magritte, Mitchell Siporin, James Brooks, and Andy Warhol. The museums collection numbers over 9000 objects, a small percentage of which are on view at any one time in rotating exhibits throughout the year. In addition to highlighting its collection, the Rose is committed to showcasing the work of emerging national and regional artists through monographic and thematic exhibitions. An exhibition brochure is published for most exhibits.
